Where have the first two months of 2022 gone? I’d say I’d wish for more than 24 hours in a day, but honestly I’m so exhausted I have no idea what I’d do with even an extra 30 minutes. Probably lay awake in bed, thinking about how I should be doing something more productive. So, let’s take advantage of this lunch hour writing time and pen my March 2022 update!

What If You Don’t Feel Like Writing?

We’ve all been there. Staring at the blinking cursor in Word or stress scrolling through the phone while the laptop sits off to the side. Two years ago I endured the pit of post partum depression. For almost the entirety of 2019, just the thought of creating something made me want to hurl. I can imagine that many people felt that way in 2020.

If you have grand aspirations to draft a novel, it can feel so disheartening if you’re in a space where the blues won’t let you build anything original. And you’re not alone. Here are some ways I’ve found to lessen the writing blues burden.

A Writer’s Greatest Enemy

What is the biggest hurdle to writing? Is it finding the time? Is it waiting for inspiration to strike? Is it constructing the perfect setup in your house or a café (pre-COVID) with the perfect beverage at the perfect temperature with the optimal background music at the perfect volume? And then as soon as any one of those components fall out of balance, your concentration shatters?

While these are annoying, I would like to argue that the biggest hurdle to writing is more insidious. More secretive. I put forth that Procrastination is the highest barrier to sitting your butt in a chair and putting words on a page.

And Why I Don’t Like them

There. I’ve said it. But don’t get me wrong, I’m not against striving for new and better habits. I just don’t think you need to wait until the first of January to get started. Don’t wait until the first of the month or the first day of the week or even tomorrow to start cultivating a new habit. Start now.
